What Is The CX-9?

Maybe you heard the name from time to time or saw an image or two, but if you happen to be completely unfamiliar with the CX-9, simply put it's a mid-sized crossover SUV. Think of it as an elevated luxury station wagon on an SUV chassis.

The CX-9 originally made its debut back in 2006 as a 2007 model based on a mid-sized vehicle chassis, featuring a basic V6 and many standard comfort and safety features. Due to the popularity of the SUV, it managed to receive a second-generation, only this time Mazda decided to reorient its position on the market and designate the CX-9 as more of a luxury SUV.

After receiving multiple facelifts throughout its first generation, the second generation honed in on a more refined look with very exquisite stylings for both the exterior and interior. The second generation also swapped to a more fuel-efficient platform, utilizing Mazda's SkyActiv technology. This includes the SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter dynamic pressure turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which generates up to 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel, and up to 250 horsepower with 320 lb-ft of torque using 93 octane premium fuel.

The advanced direct injection fuel system coupled with the 16-valve, chain-driven dual overhead cams with variable valve timing all help to reduce fuel consumption and increase fuel efficiency. This is thanks to technologies such as cylinder deactivation, which reduces the engine workload and increases fuel economy. With electronic stability control, i-Activ traction control assistance, and the SkyActiv Drive 6-speed automatic transmission with optional manual shifting via Sport Mode, the CX-9 manages to combine many elements of sports vehicles with the quality and comfort of an executive luxury ride. And it does so without breaking the bank.

Mazda Means Luxury

While it might seem as if Mazda is known more for convenience, executive sedans, and compact sports cars, they have also been carving out their own space in the market for luxury vehicles as well, including the midsize crossover SUV, the CX-9. The exterior is designed to evoke a sense of sophistication and admiration. The lines are subtle, and the color schemes gracefully distinguished, while the interior is hewn with a level of elegance you rarely see in most SUVs.

Optional leather-trimmed seats, interior carpeted mats, cargo liners, power windows, power locks with speed-sensing auto-locking, three-zone automatic climate control with high-density pollen filter, dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors, and a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror all help to set the Mazda CX-9 apart from the competition.

Every trim is perfectly crafted to keep the CX-9 in the limelight of luxury, never foregoing an opportunity to shower drivers in lavish features. These can include a standard tilt and telescopic steering, remote fuel-door release, pocket door illumination, remote keyless entry, push-button start, paddle shifters, and power sliding glass moon-roof operated via a one-touch-open mechanic. Other features that help separate the CX-9 from other crossover SUVs on the market include optional aluminum interior trimming, multiple row USB ports, cargo storage access throughout the cabin, and both heated and ventilated front seats with available heated second-row seats that you can modify at up to three levels.

You have never experienced luxury like this from an SUV as affordable as the CX-9.

Is The CX-9 Right For You?

It's one thing to have a list of features that seem appealing in a vehicle, but it's another thing to actually own the vehicle. There are many facets and aspects of purchasing a new or used Mazda that car shoppers have to ponder over, such as capacity, fuel economy, pricing, and safety features.

If you know you want a luxury SUV, then you already know that the CX-9 is a vehicle worth considering. But what about the other aspects of this midsize crossover? Well, if you have a large family, you can expect to seat anywhere between 6 to 7 passengers in the CX-9 with up to three rows of seating. In addition to seating, the CX-9 provides plenty of cargo space as well. Everyone will have plenty of room to relax and spread out while you have the cargo space filled with luggage or groceries.

Passengers can stay entertained with a great number of comfort and infotainment features. This includes, but is not limited to, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full-color center touchscreen display, a multi-functional commander control unit, voice-controlled infotainment functionality, as well as access to Mazda's connected services for easy access to hands-free calls. There truly is no limit to the Mazda's tech features. Bluetooth connectivity and voice-activated communication menus come standard. There's also available support for wireless charging, making it easy to keep your work or personal devices charged without having to plug them into ports or outlets.

In addition to luxury and comfort features, other safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assistance, and multiple front and side-impact airbags. Plus, the Mazda CX-9 is capable of towing small trailers, small boats, or other light equipment, making it perfect for camping trips or outings at the lake.

If safety, fuel economy, and plenty of interior comforts are all features you seek out of a luxury crossover SUV; then the CX-9 is right for you.
