Are you currently searching for a new vehicle? One that ditches the norm and fully embraces what it means to be a new and innovative automobile in the modern-day? If so, then the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is the perfect vehicle for you. The CX-5 is firmly nestled between Mazda’s other SUV offerings, including the lower-powered CX-30 and larger CX-9. For the past hundred years, Mazda has witnessed the automotive industry unfold, and its legacy remains to this day with a lineup that’s best described as stronger than ever. It’s time to visit your Houston Mazda CX-5 dealer and take a look at this one-of-a-kind vehicle.

The CX-5 has been around since 2013, and at the time of its release, critics praised the CX-5 for a variety of different reasons. Perhaps the most notable of these praises were directed at the CX-5’s ability to produce impressive fuel-efficiency along with plenty of new and exciting tech features. This remains the case for newer models, and even the base-model 2021 CX-5 Sport is both feature-rich and value-conscious, coming in at an MSRP of $25,370. For a majority of drivers, the base CX-5 may be more than enough to sustain the appeal for purchase, but for those looking for even more, there are six other trim levels to select from, all of which adding something new.

Two Available Powertrains

Back when the CX-5 launched, there was only one engine option. While the power it produced wasn’t all too impressive for its time, only netting 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, its EPA-estimated ratings were one of the main selling points. At its best, the 2013 CX-5 earned ratings of 26 MPG city and 34 MPG highway, which even today is an impressive accomplishment. Today, there are two significantly more powerful engines to choose from in the 2021 CX-5.

While the base engine is still a traditional four-cylinder, much like the 2013 model, it’s a larger 2.5L design. The 2021 CX-5’s engine comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Upgrades have been made to the CX-5’s powertrain over the years, as a 2021 model’s base engine adds about 20% more horsepower and 24% greater torque over the original engine. This engine gets EPA-estimated ratings of 25 MPG city and 31 MPG highway, which is an impressive achievement for an SUV with above-average power and an engaging six-speed automatic transmission. Overall, driving the CX-5 feels more like handling a nimble car rather than a luxurious people-mover, which is the trademark feature of all Mazda vehicles.

If you want even more excitement from your CX-5, there is a turbocharged version of the base engine. Regardless of this engine being the same size as the base one, the added turbocharger means that you can expect massive performance gains from your vehicle. Paired to the same six-speed automatic transmission, this engine produces an impressive 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, which is essentially 34% more horsepower and an even more substantial 72% increase to torque output over the non-turbocharged engine.

Technological Superiority

Against other models in the CX-5’s price range, Mazda offers the most bang-for-your-buck tech that we’ve seen. With a host of the latest features at your disposal, you can guarantee that your CX-5 will remain relevant for a long time. Features such as infotainment centers are the byproduct of combining vehicles with computers for connectivity, entertainment, and even safety.

When you’re shopping for a vehicle in this price range, there’s a strong chance that you will receive an infotainment center of some kind. But typically speaking, the majority of infotainment centers in this price range are limited to screens that measure out between five and eight inches. This is by no means a deal-breaker, but Mazda aims to take it a step further. By including a 10.25-inch screen standard with every CX-5 trim, Mazda offers a luxurious experience that is difficult to find in other vehicles in this price range. Mazda also makes use of easy-to-reach buttons and dials on the center console, similar to what you would find in a luxury car, rather than forcing you to lean forward and manipulate a finicky touchscreen while driving.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both come with the CX-5, and if you’ve ever wanted more simplicity with your infotainment center, then this is how. With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can access your contacts through your infotainment center, utilize your phone’s preferred app for turn-by-turn directions, and of course, listening to your favorite music is always a press away. Consuming media is a large part of the CX-5’s overall experience, and the infotainment center combined with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto help to heighten this.

At the base configuration, music will sound decent enough with a 4-speaker setup within your cabin, but you may want to consider upgrading this. With the affordable Touring trim, this 4-speaker setup is replaced by a 6-speaker setup, which is certainly better. But all the other trims come standard with a 10-speaker Bose Centerpoint 2 surround sound system – another luxury feature you will not find on most vehicles in this price range. With HD radio, Pandora, and SiriusXM satellite radio, you will never find yourself without entertainment when you are driving a CX-5.

Interior Measurements

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 fits five passengers with generous interior measurements. Up in the front row, you can expect 39.7-inches of headroom accompanied by 41-inches of legroom. Fortunately for those sitting in the backseat, the dimensions are nearly the same, with 39-inches of headroom and 39.6-inches of legroom. Folding down the backseats will give you a maximum of 59.6 cu.ft. of cargo space, but even when all the seats are occupied, you will still have 30.9 cu.ft. Overall, this is one of the most spacious and comfortable SUVs in its class, easily allowing you to transport four adults in comfort during long road trips.
