The Mazda 3 enters the second year of its fourth generation with a few changes. The 2020 Mazda3 Sedan gets a few changes this year, including Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features newly standard on all sedan trim models. I-Activsense was previously only standard on the upper sedan trim levels and the hatchbacks. It comes with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The 2020 Mazda3 is available in sedan and hatchback body styles at dealerships like the Mazda dealer near Houston. We’ll focus on the sedan version in this review.

Instead of trim levels, the 2020 Mazda3 Sedan is offered in different packages: base, Select, Preferred and Premium. According to Houston Mazda dealership, the 2020 Mazda3 Sedan is powered by a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 186 horses and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available on all models except the base.

The Mazda3 Sedan is one of the few compact cars to offer all-wheel drive. Mazda’s predictive all-wheel-drive system is well-suited to driving on snow, ice and other slippery road surfaces. It’s capable of modifying the torque distribution predictively when needed to eliminate wheel-spin.

The base Mazda3 S has a nice list of standard features, including push-button start, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, a stereo system with eight speakers, an 8.8-inch display, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Stepping up to the Select gets even more features, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Preferred Package includes a premium 12-speaker Bose stereo system, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and memory, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Premium adds amenities such as a head-up display, a power moonroof, leather seats and more. Available features include a wireless charging pad, a navigation system and a black exterior accent package.

The 2020 Mazda3 Sedan has yet to be rated by the NHTSA or the IIHS as of this writing. However, last year’s model received five-out-of-five stars by the NHTSA for overall safety. The IIHS gave the 2019 model it’s top score of Good in all crash tests and named it a Top Safety Pick. We expect the results for the 2020 model to be identical to last year.
