Two engines are available, a naturally aspirated inline four and a turbocharged four-cylinder unit. Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels get the 2.5-liter engine that develops 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, which sends its power to the wheels through the same six-speed automatic transmission that's mated to the turbo engine. Reserve and Signature trim levels get the 2.5-liter turbo-four, which then puts 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque at the driver's disposal. The first three trims get standard front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option. Models equipped with the turbo-four engine get standard all-wheel drive.

Instead of a complicated list of available options, Mazda bundles most features together into the five distinct trim levels, but the result is a range of crossovers that are well-equipped throughout the lineup. Standard features for the entry-level Sport include a full set of power features, 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, blind-spot monitors, low-speed automatic emergency braking, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, air conditioning and tire pressure monitors.

CX-5 Touring models provide excellent value, adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, synthetic leather upholstery, keyless ignition, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control to what was already a long list of standard equipment in the Sport.

Grand Touring models get leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, 19-inch alloys, satellite radio and navigation. The Grand Touring Reserve is the first trim that can get the turbocharged engine. It also includes the Premium Package, which features a head-up display, cooled front seats, heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.
