CX-5 models with the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will see a small boost in torque, from 310 lb-ft to 320 lb-ft. Horsepower is still the same. Mazda’s new Engine Harmonics Enhancer tunes the engine to provide a more powerful sound. The engine gets a new off-road mode, which delivers better performance for low-traction driving, and the Grand Touring trim gets steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, regardless of the engine choice.

The Mazda CX-5 is available in five trims, listed as Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature. Powering the Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models is a standard 2.5-liter engine that produces 187 horses and 186 lb-ft of torque, teamed to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims employ a turbocharged 2.5-liter powerplant that now puts out 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The CX-5 with the turbocharged engine gets all-wheel drive standard.

Inside, you’ll find a level of sophistication that’s normally reserved for luxury models. The cabin is replete with high-quality materials. Drivers will appreciate the floor-hinged accelerator pedal, which delivers a better feel than the pedal on other vehicles in the segment. The steering wheel is at the right angle and the armrests in the front seats are comfortable. There’s plenty of storage space, along with a number of places to store phones and other personal belongings, including a bin with a removable shelf and a deep tray in the center console. All models get a 7.0-inch touchscreen that features an easy-to-use rotary control and a logically designed interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the upper trims.

As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has tested the 2020 Mazda CX-5. However last year’s model received five-out-of-five stars in overall safety from the NHTSA. The IIHS gave the 2019 CX-5 its highest marks of Good in all crash tests and named it a Top Safety Pick+ model. We expect to see identical results for the 2020 CX-5.
